ELKINS FLAT OUTING: by Chas Moser
We were able to camp in our usual "meadow" spot, although our space has been curtailed to about half of what it was originally. Turnout was modest, with seven rigs showing up and one day rider on Sunday. On Thursday, Chas searched high and low for the elusive "Elkins Flat Swimming Hole" and his quest was finally successful after a day of deductive searching. Friday's ride led three of us south for a 30-mile loop over some of the Gold Note trails below Elkins. It was decided that these trails were too dusty, at least compared to most of the Elkins Flat trails. Saturday, seven riders rode 38 miles more or less zigzagging over the upper Elkins Flat trails ending up at the newly-discovered swimming hole for lunch. On our route back to camp, we stopped by the picturesque swimming hole/waterfall near Caldor. We arrived back at camp just in time for the (now) coed "wine social" which was enjoyed by both riders and non-riders alike, and then freshened up for the evening Potluck. Chas felt that the "cold dish" potluck was a rousing success and enjoyed it immensely. Others validated these impressions; however, word has it that some were heard muttering, "Where's the hot food" ... or words to that effect. Sunday, three of us had a very enjoyable 79-mile ride which included lunch at Leek Springs Lookout. Chas should mention that some of those 79 miles included him backtracking somewhat for a photo session, since his borrowed camera was temporarily non-operational during the first part of the ride. [It was worth it.] Enjoy the photos.
