Packer Lake
In the past, we camped nearby at Gold Lake, which is about 5 miles from Packer Lake.
The ride from the Packer Lake campground avoids the 2 miles of helmet sized rocks on the
trail out of the Gold Lake campground. The Packer Lake campground isn't right at the lake
(0.9 miles), but other than that, it is a very enjoyable location.
Elevation: 6,400 feet.
Facilities: None.

Directions: Take I-80 to Truckee, then north on Hwy 89 for about 23 miles to
Sierraville. Make a left onto Hwy 49 and go approximately 18 miles west to Bassetts. At
the Bassets corner (store/deli/cafe), turn right (north) onto Gold Lake Road. Proceed
approximately 1.4 miles and turn left onto Packer Lake Road. Continue with the
instructions below.***
An alternative route, which is about 22 miles shorter from the Sacramento area,
but takes roughly 25 minutes longer, is to take Hwy 49 out of Auburn, for about 87
miles through Grass Valley, Downieville and Sierra City to Bassetts. Turn left onto Gold
Lake Road and follow directions below.***
*** At the first intersection (approx. 0.3 mile off Gold Lake Road), bear right to stay
on Packer Lake Road (lake will be in 2.6 miles, but do NOT turn towards Packer Lake at the
sign reading "1/2 mile to Packer Lake"). Continue on the blacktop 0.9 miles to
camp on the right side, just before the sharp right curve and the steep uphill.

28 miles (about 50 minutes) from Packer Lake
Return to Gold Lake Road and head north towards Graeagle.
Turn right on Graeagle Road and go north for 1.5 miles.
Continue on Gold Lake Forest Hwy and go northeast for 5.6 miles.
Turn left onto CA-89 and go northwest for 2.7 miles.
Turn right onto CA-70 and go east for 9.3 miles.
Turn right onto Gulling Street (Bank of America on the corner).
Cross the railroad tracks, and continue past Commercial Street.
Turn right onto 1st Avenue. Continue for 4 blocks.
The hospital is on top of the hill on the right. |

50 miles (about 1 hour 15 minutes) from Packer Lake
Return to Gold Lake Road and head south towards Bassetts.
Turn left onto CA-49 and go east for 17.8 miles.
Turn right onto CA-89 and go southeast for 23.2 miles.
Turn right onto I-80 towards Sacramento and go west for 1.3 miles.
Take the "Central Truckee" exit.
Turn right onto Donner Pass Road and go west for 0.4 miles.
Turn left onto either Levone Avenue or Pine Avenue.
